Złota Żaba / Golden Frog: Dusza i ciało / On Body and Soul

Máté Herbai zdobył wczoraj w Bydgoszczy nagrodę – Złotą Żabę za film O Duszy i Ciele.

***

Bohaterowie filmu to inspektorka jakości i dyrektor finansowy w rzeźni.

Przede wszystkim jednak daje do myślenia O Duszy i Ciele. O nierozerwalnym związku, o przeciwnościach, o naturze ludzkiej, o przetrwaniu, o rozterkach i dokonywaniu wyborów, O Dobru i Złu, O Sennej i Krwistej esencji tego świata – O Śnie i Krwi.

Máté Herbai przygodę z kamerą rozpoczynał kilkanaście lat temu jako jeden z operatorów magazynu telewizyjnego Pannon expressz, w którym ekipa realizatorska przemierzając pociągiem Nizinę Panońską (Węgierską) z pomocą miejscowej ludności, odkrywała przed widzami ukryte tajemnice, perły kulturowe, miejskie legendy miast i wiosek Węgier i obszarów przygranicznych. A Zinner.

Jednak pierwszy poważny film Herbai’a, dystrybuowany od 2001 roku, to egzystencjalistyczna opowieść Citromfej / Cytrynowa głowa.

***

Golden Frog: Soul and Body / On Body and Soul

Fig. Máté Herbai, dir. Ildikó Enyedi

***

Máté Herbai won the Golden Frog Award for his film about the soul and the body yesterday in Bydgoszcz.
How will lovers do, who for a long time meet in dreams? What will they do if they meet one day in a different body and in another world, somewhere where life and feelings are annihilated daily?

The film’s characters are the quality inspector and the finance director at the slaughterhouse.

At night, a few kilometers away, in loneliness, dream together as a roe deer.

In the day the blood of the meat in their mouth.

It is a movie about love – one from dreams and the other in the day. It brings a forest of questions about satisfaction, fear, romance, eye contact, kindness, love.

Most of all, it gives you a sense of soul and body. About the Unbreakable Relationship, Opposites, Human Nature, Survival, Dilemmas and Choices, About the Good and Evil, The Dreamy and the Bloody Essence of the World – About the Dream and the Blood.

Máté Herbai’s adventure with the camera began several years ago as one of the operators of the television magazine Pannon expressz, where the production team traversing the Pannonian plain (Hungarian) with the help of the local population discovered hidden secrets, cultural pearls, urban legends of towns and villages in Hungary and border areas. The operator is still associated with television, which is confirmed by his numerous documentaries, the last of 2017. A Zinner.
But Herbai’s first serious film, distributed since 2001, is the existentialist story of Citromfa / Lemonhead.

***

The main theme of the Lemon Head is the mask, the prestige, the symbol of the pseudo-identity that hides and makes the character different. The filmmakers claim that it is not the world that is distorted, but we ourselves, and getting rid of a happy face, in the face of a constant race for profit and success is very painful. When this mask falls, the horror, the indescribable gesture of a frozen, exaggerated, eternal American smile is revealed. From our neutral features, the mask of the abnormal world is discovered – like a photographic negative. It is a posthumous mask, known from Antique to the Middle Ages, depicting people living in another world – people from the underworld, through the scary emotion of ritual masks.

The film’s authors point to the schizophrenic history of culture, the political situation, and the artistic world of the media, where success is directly proportional to destruction and wear. They try to suggest that the similarity of life after death to the jaw thrusting from the smile of success is small. Similarily the difference between us and the behavior in the mask and idiocy.
